A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Change is affecting every aspect of life and rugby does not escape. The League System, the movement of players between clubs, and financial pressures of all sorts are a part of it. Management of these changes is essential if the game is not to suffer.

In the past Rugby Union has been fiercely amateur and I hope that this tradition will not be further de-valued. Preston Grasshoppers will do its best to play a constructive part in recognising and helping to preserve what is best in the game.

I hope that the coming season and all our games will be enjoyable and a credit to Rugby and to the club.

Once again our thanks are due to all those members who work to that end.

This season our ambition is to gain promotion into National League IV. Good Luck to the First Team Squad and to their Coaches.

Richard Eastwood

TODAY’S GAME

We open our Lancashire Cup campaign today with a visit from Sefton R.U.F.C. We trust that their players and officials enjoy their visit to Lightfoot Green although our aim is to ensure that the recent embarrassment of Preston North End is enough for the town.

Our paths have not crossed for many years although another trip to the archives reveals that Sefton have a long history and were regular opponents in our Farringdon Park days. Sefton play in the Cheshire/Lancashire South league and recently managed a 48-0 away victory at Newton-le-Willows. Now that the leagues have bedded down margins of that size are few and far between. Our visitors qualified for the Lancashire Cup as a result of their success in reaching the last eight in the Lancashire Trophy. Wins over Ashton-under-Lyne, Metrovick and Rossendale took them to the quarter final but a visit to Aspull halted their progress.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

In the 1920s, Hoppers played Sefton twice each season. Usually games were at 1st, 'A and 'B' team level as, although Sefton were running four sides, the Hoppers Extra B made somewhat irregular appearances.

Jan 3rd 1925

Sefton 0 Pts Hoppers 3 Pts

A keen and close game was won for the Hoppers by an unconverted try by winger L. Barton following a combined dribbling movement. Mackenzie, Redhead and Taylor were the pick of the home side with Ramsay, Wiseman and Dearden outstanding for Hoppers.

The return fixture was switched to Leyland Motors as Farringdon Park was again unfit. R.C. Leigh scored a try for Hoppers after twelve minutes but the visitors drew level early in the second half with a penalty by Foggo.
