Refreshed Hourbourmen in Nine Try Romp

HOLYHEAD..55 SEFTON ..14

by Mick Milligan

HOLYHEAD Rugby Club ended their season on a high note, with a convincing 55-14 victory over the visitors from Merseyside, Liverpool Sefton RUFC. The mature Sefton side were led by their youthful Club chairman, Brian Eden, and included Dick Lloyd, formerly of Holyhead but now exiled to Liverpool. The Harbourmen were obviously refreshed from a couple of weeks without a game, and started off from the first whistle in top gear, with the powerful front row of Rob Elfed Roberts, Frank Hadley and Geraint Williams exerting a great deal of pressure on the opposition. Cliff Hadley played a storming game in the second row and won much clean ball at number two in the lines out. Fellow second row forward was by Mick Milligan his forceful self and put the first points on the board with his fifth try of the season, which Jon Campbell converted. With this stimulus, three further tries soon followed, scored by Mark Tiger Clowes, Martin Kernon and the multi-talented Dave Williams. Powerful Andy Dobbie at centre proved a hard man to stop on his surging runs, one of which produced an excellent try just before half time to bring the scoreline up to 34-0. Sefton's team talk during the break obviously had the desired effect, with Wayne Osborne scoring a well taken try, which he converted himself, to put the first Liverpool points on the board. Brockless continued to harry the defence and some fine attacking play brought him another try and a conversion. The lively home back row of Huw Owen, Mark Clowes and Kev Bratherton snuffed out many promising moves by Sefton. Despite the many pressures, the visitors rallied their troops, and Graham Jones eluded all the opposition to storm over for a fine try which Wayne Osborne converted. With their score now in double figures, Sefton took new heart and put together some nice moves, but failed to penetrate the resolute line of defence put up by Holyhead.

Wallasey 11 Sefton 7

Sefton were unlucky to have two tries disallowed as Wallasey almost let slip an 11-point lead in this Lancashire South/Cheshire league derby.

Conrad North scored a try and kicked a penalty and Ian Booth added a penalty for the winners while Dave Keegan grabbed Sefton’s try, conversted by Robin Earwaker.
