Holyhead rugby club opened their season by entertaining Liverpool Sefton RFC at Four Mile Bridge in a fixture that produced seven tries. Sefton came out on top with four tries, in a points tally of 22-17.
The contest was closely fought in a physically bruising game in which the visitors had the better of the exchanges in the first half. Sefton put some early points on the board with a strong run and try by winger Garry Hampton playing in his first game for Sefton.
No.8 Ian Burns added another try by plunging over the line after a maul, and full back Paul Evangelides treated himself to a runaway try which left the defence for dead.
This trio of tries stung ring rusty Holyhead into action, with Matt Mason taking a quick tap penalty to put heavyweight prop Geraint Williams on one of his bull like charges over the try-line. Captain Jon Campbell converted, to bring the half time score to 15-7 in favour of the visitors.
At the restart the Harbourmen showed a bit more form and organization in their rugby, with Dylan Parry, Bims Jones and Cliff Hadley gaining some good ball in the lines-out, often negating the powerful figure of Seftons’s second row forward, Fijian Mac Navula. Despite Gwilym Parry putting in some crunching defensive tackles in the centre, Sefton stand-off Wayne Osborne eluded his pursuers to score a try converted by Evangelides.
Holyhead countered this blow by exerting some forward pressure with Nigel Lewis and Gwyn Parry in the thick of the action. After an interesting exhibition of handbagging by Messrs Harper and Mason, which did not meet with the referee’s approval, Cliff Hadley crashed over the try-line to reduce the deficit.
Mason then made some substantial incursions into Sefton’s territory, and a storming run produced a try.
With only five points separating the sides, Sefton’s captain Andy Walsh rallied his troops enough to keep out the marauding Harbourmen, and secure a hard fought victory.
