Gladden in bid for West Derby seat
FORMER Liverpool councillor Roy Gladden is to stand against MP Bob Wareing for the West Derby constituency. Mr Gladden, 52, announced his decision to become a prospective candidate today. Veteran politician Wareing, 69, failed to be automatically re-selected as the candidate for the safe seat in the next election, but he has vowed to fight on and keep it. Mr Gladden has a strong history within the Labour Party and the trade union movement, having worked as a full time convenor for the GMB. He represented Clubmoor Ward on the council between 1982-87, when he became one of the 47 Labour councillors banned from public office for five years after setting a late rate. Mr Gladden of Ballantyne Grove, Clubmoor, said: "I consider myself the best person for the job and for West Derby. That's why I have come forward and thrown my hat in the ring." Shortlisting and selection is likely to take place by March, with candidates from all over the country being considered on a national panel.
