A superb solo try by Matt Thomas and a touchline conversion by Phil Evans eight minutes from the end gave Sefton a draw in this Lancashire Plate second round thriller.

This Cheshire South Lancashire Third Division clash ended 15 minutes early because of bad light after Sefton had been sent to another ground in error.

Sefton officials are seeking league guidance on the matter and the possibility of a replayed game. Phil Evans landed their two penalties.

Originally selected as a substitute, second-row forward Ian Ross was drafted in at the last minute and walked away with the Man of the Match award.

This win keeps Sefton hot on the heels of the Cheshire South Lancashire Third Division leaders and owed much to the work of Ross, Dave Neary, 20 point Phil Evans and Wayne Osborne.

Their tries were scored by Brian Gardner, Evans, Ross and Osborne with Evans adding three conversions and three penalties.

Without five first teamers, Sefton and the Junior Knockout Cup went their separate ways as the visitors faded late on.

Prop Brian Gardner scored their only try with centre Phil Evans kicking four penalties to keep Sefton in contention.

Sefton 's Cheshire South Lancashire Division Three promotion hopes took a knock as Ruskin Park took charge in the last 20 minutes.

Sefton scored with a Brian Gardner try and a Phil Evans penalty.

Back row star Dave Neary scored a solo try from half way to highlight a man of the match display which keeps Sefton among the front runners in Cheshire South Lancashire Division Three.

Nick Cox and Phil Osborne also crossed with Phil Evans adding a conversion and three penalties.
